Over the past 10 to 15 years, asthma education programs have been developed to teach patients and their children with asthma about asthma and to train them in appropriate “self-management” skills. A number of programs have been tested objectively and found to be effective in reducing various parameters of morbidity, and none have been shown to be associated with increased problems as a result of patients or parents taking more responsibility in management of the disease. Several programs are available to the practicing physician and local health care organizations. It is strongly recommended that patient education be incorporated into the regular care of every patient with asthma.
