Isi artikelIt is well known fact that viral respiratory infections are associated with acute episodes of wheezing in persons with asthma and can cause airway hyperresponsiveness-an important clinical feature of asthma-in individuals without asthma.Several mechanisms have been proposed by which viruses may mediate these changes and include the production of viral specific IgE, upregulation of leukocyte inflammatory activity, enhancement of the factors involved in the generation of latephase allergic responses, altered autonomic nervous system activity, and damage to the airway epithelium. This article reviews the epidemiology behind this association and the pathogenesis of virus-induced airway hyperresponsivensess in the development of airway inflammation.
