This paper discusses the political role of local elite in the formation of Tana Tidung Regency in East Kalimantan. In the formation process, there has been pro and contra among local elites including traditional elite and local political elite that bring into conflict between ethnicity resulting in cancellation of the formation of three districts in Nunukan regency which is part of Tana territory.
