Isi artikelLinking sexual and reproductive health with HIV/AIDS programmes and services has the potential to significantly curtail the AIDS epidemic as wel as contribute to the achievement of the Millennium Development Goals. Futhermore, linking gender, sexual and reproductive health and HIV/AIDS, as well as making those friendly to young people can address missed opportunities in HIV prevention and care, and improve the reproductive health status of the population. In view of the importance of this linkage, the International Council on Management of Population Programmes (ICOMP) has initiated a series of small projects to enhance the capacity of community-level partner organizations to link sexual and reproductive health and HIV/AIDS programmes and services. This article provides an oversight of this international non-governmental organization's experience in championing the linked response in Sub-Saharan Africa and draws lessons which can be of value for similar initiatives in the Asian and Pacific region. These project have contributed to developing the capacity of partners at various levels. At the organizational level, understanding about the linkages between sexual and reproductive health and HIV/AIDS, as well as gender has been improved. At the delivery level, the sevice mix was strengthened and referral linkages between organizations were established and enhanced. At the community level, the initiatives were able-to some extent-to change the community's perception towards issues related to reproductive health women and girls as well as males' participation in reproductive health and HIV prevention. Based on the experience of ICOMP in Africa, one can assert that small-scale facility-based interventions can contribute meeting the goals of the ICPD Programme of Action. Since the health-care system is relatively stronger in Asia that it is in Africa, linked response can be promoted more systematically throughout the region, also drawing on the large number of vibrant non-government organozations which operate in most countries of the region.
