Isi artikelThis study examined the effectiveness of using elaborative interrogation to remember facts embedded in prose paragraphs. Grade 7 students read a l6-paragraph text describing the characteristics and behaviors of four common animals. One group of students (N = 38) was told to answer the verbatim-response question written beside each paragraph, while the second group (N = 32) was told to answer the why question written beside each paragraph. On the post-test measure of achievement, students who answered the why question were more likely to correctly match the animal with its characteristic. These results suggest that elaborative interrogation is a useful strategy for aiding students' memory for facts contained in prose paragraphs.
