This paper provides a broad context from which to consider reading to locate specific information in text and documents. It is argued that the ever-increasing availability of information means that people need to develop the ability and the disposition to use effective information seeking strategies, including reading to locate. To support this view, this paper discusses workplace research, information literacy, and technological innovation in relation to reading to locate. The priority given in school and society to reading to locate is also considered, as well as evidence on reading to locate performance and the role of reading to locate in contextualized learning.
