Abstract
Age-related Macular Degeneration (ARMD) is a third common cause of decreasing visual function and blindness in the world with 8,7% in prevalence and the primary cause of blindness in developing countries. This disease common in elder person. The risk factors of this disease are female, smoker, history of hipertention, genetic, body mass index and food. ARMD is a disease that affects central of retina or
macula. The symptoms of ARMD are drusen, geographic atrophy, neovascularization, hemorrhage and also exudate in the funduscopic exam. Degenerative proccess plays an
important role in developing this disease because in elder person there is also changes in their eyes. The changes are the accumulation of debris and drusen in pigment epithelial
cell of retina and Bruch’s membrane, the debris and drusen will damage the epithelial pigment of retina and that make inflammation proccess occur and also neovascularization. Omega 3 especially DHA highly contain in outer segment of retina. The role of omega 3 towards retina is anti inflammation, anti angiogenic and antiapoptotic and less consume of omega 3 especially DHA will higher the risk of this disease. This study is a literature study and from the earlier study said that omega 3 has a potential role in decreasing the risk of advanced ARMD. Nevertheless, from the earlier study did not explain specifically the role of omega 3 in decreasing the risk of ARMD so it is necessary to do further study.
