Isi artikelIn this article I explore the stress phenomenon in Jakarta Indonesian illustrated by the minimal pair below: 1. [VPnaek [NPmotor gúwe]] ‘I rode my motorcycle’. 2. [VPnaek [NP mótor]] [VPguwe] ‘I rode a motorcycle’. In the first sentence, stress is located on the penultimate syllable of guwe, which functions as the possessor of motor. In the second sentence, stress is assigned to the penultimate syllable of motor. In this sentence guwe is the subject. There are two hypotheses to account for the placement of stress in these examples. The first hypothesis is that stress is assigned to the penultimate syllable in a phonological phrase that roughly corresponds to the object NP. Under this hypothesis, motor and guwe in (1) sit in the same domain e.g. naek [motor guwe] because guwe is the possessor of motor. In contrast, in (2) they occupy independent NPs e.g. naek [motor] [guwe]. Here, each NP receives stress on its penultimate syllable however motor receives sentential stress as the object of the sentence. The second hypothesis is that stress is assigned to the penultimate syllable in a phrase that roughly corresponds to the clause. Under this hypothesis the structure of (1) is [naek motor guwe]. In order to explain why the stress in (2) is assigned to motor instead of guwe, I suggest that the VP naek motor as a whole constituent undergoes a VP fronting as a result of being focused. In my presentation I provide a description of the phonetic correlates of stress and use them to test my hypotheses.
