We realize that the primacy of aural-oral activities asserted by structural linguists have caused an unfortunate downgrading of the reading and writing components of language teaching. And compared to reading, writing is neglected more. The scarcity of books on writing as compared to those on reading proves that writing has been a neglected area of English language teaching (Hedge, 1992:6). This claim is supported by the result of a survey done by Al-Wasilah (2001:24) who found that "compared with speaking and reading, writing is infrequently taught.” Writing is perceived as the most difficult skill to acquire by students and to teach by teachers (Smith, 1980:212). Based on the evidence and the ideas above, it can be concluded that there are some problems in teaching and learning writing. From the interviews to some junior high school teachers of English in South Sumatra Province, there are two crucial problems identified. They are: (1) the students often find themselves having no idea what to express, and if they have the ideas, they have a problem of how to express them; and (2) the teachers still have no idea what kind of teaching strategies are appropriate to solve this problem. In fact, there are many discussions related to the teaching materials. However, most of them deal only with how to arrange the ideas in paragraphs—main ideas and supporting ideas, how to identify good and poor sentences; and how to write in a certain writing. However, good writing in English requires the ability to write good sentences and to organize them logically into paragraphs and essays (Oshima and Hogue, 1999:xi). The problem of teaching EFL students in sentence-writing is how to facilitate the students so that they have the ideas and are able to express those ideas in right and good sentences which, in turn, may motivate them to write in English. This paper is aimed at presenting the result of a research of the use of a teaching strategy called Sentence Processing Manual (SPM). SPM is a step by step sentence-writing guide that enables the students to make their own sentences and will act as a control device to eliminate or at least to reduce their mistakes in sentences
