Isi artikelThe study investigated an alternative for L2 phonology by reassessing perception, discourse intonation, and sound production using English phonetic transcription and recorded speech. Recorded data by Asian speakers of English were collected using relevant English phonetics commonly found to be phonotactically challenging for many Indonesian and Korean speakers. The data were analyzed using frameworks in English phonology (Brazil et al, 1980; Brazil, 1997; Jenkins, 2000; Dardjowidjojo, 2009). Results indicated that the voice samples provided the phonetic evidence of L2 in that they describe the varying perceptions of sounds. The sound perceptions revealed processes in segmental and suprasegmental dimensions, in which L2 speakers’ sound production differed. More importantly, such processes allow the L2 speakers to self-evaluate their own sound productions and discourse intonation. The analysis of sounds forms a natural link between phonological awareness and interactional competence and bears an important pedagogical consequence in terms of both improving instructional materials particularly in L2 phonology and fostering learning independence and growth in L2 communities. Based on the findings, strategies in teaching the ESL phonology are discussed
