Isi artikelClassroom or pedagogic discourse refers to the type of language use that it is found in classroom situations, which involved teacher and students interaction. Analyzing classroom discourse is useful in effort to understand the real-natural situation and accurate picture that happen in the teaching and learning process. Thus, this paper aims to analyze the most important element in the discourse - ‘move’, using Sinclair & Coulthard classroom discourse structure framework. Pattern of move in the classroom discourse will be identified and described through the unit of ‘exchange’. Analysis will be focusing on comparison between urban and rural schools. Is there any differences or similarities? It is assumed that children in urban area are more expose to English compared to rural pupils in term of facilities, reading materials, and inter-ethnics relationship. As such, it is also assumed that teachers will fine-tune their teaching style and consider the ability of English of their pupils in the teaching and learning process. Among the consideration can be done by teachers is an alteration in the pattern of move. From the findings, this paper discusses who control the move in the classroom discourse of ESL in Malaysian context.
