The paper presents an overview of the systemic functional lingusitics (SFL) developed by M. A. K. Halliday, including the simultaneously operating ideational/experiential, interpersonal, and textual functions, register and genre. Vygotsky’s theory of the central role of language in human communication and cognition is believed to provide a rationale for the various functional theories of language developed in SFL. Finally, the paper discusses how SFL implies in language education and research.
