Isi artikelOne of annual social phenomena in Indonesia is “Mudik Lebaran” that is related to religious practice of Moslem called Ramadhan and Ied Fitri. On the same time Ied Fitri greetings are addressed one another. Students from English department are part of them. They send greetings through s ms in variety of versions and greetings in English is one of them. Observing language choice as well as meaning in their utterances in English expressing Ied Greeting is the aim of this research. In explaining language use in this case Ied Fitri greetings, pragmatic and sociolinguistics points of view will be used. Pragmatics and sociolinguistics share many areas of common interest, and sociolinguistics have contributed much to certain areas of pragmatics. However, pragmatics in turn has much to contribute to sociolinguistics; for in trying to understand the underlying structural properties and processes that constrain verbal interaction (Levinson: 1983). For example, Bernstein (1973: Chapter 6) has attributed sociological causes to patterns of hesitation without understanding the underlying conversational motivations for such patterns (e.g. the role of preference structure). Similarly, socio linguist have tended to ignore the conversational motivations for the use of address forms (contrast Ervin-Tripp, 1972 and Brown & Levinson, 1978:187ff). Indeed conversational analysis in general has a great deal to offer to sociolinguistics. For example, the view of conversation as basic or paradigmatic and other forms of talk exchange as specializations (Sacks, Schegloff & Jefferson, 1978:45ff;Atkinson&Drew,1979) may help to put the ethnography of speaking on a sounder comparative basis (cf.Hymes,1972). Similarly the variationist paradigm associated with Labov's own observation that sociolinguistics variables are impart discourse-conditioned (Labov & Fanshel, 1977:139). But the fields have so many common concerns that there is no real danger of the lack of cross-fertilization, especially amongst sociolinguistics with an interest in language understanding. 1 Multilingual research has revealed that languages coexisting in one society are hardly ever equal, if only because they are associated with demographic strength, power and prestige. Choosing one language and another or choosing elements of one language or another, therefore invariably carries social meaning. Every choice has a motivation and hence can be explained. Coulmas (2005: 109) stated that there is a zone where speakers are not necessarily aware in every situation whether, for communicative purposes at hand, they are choosing an element of language or the language itself. This is most in evidence in a range of linguistic phenomena subsumed under the umbrella term 'code-switching'.
