Isi artikelThis study discusses about the transitivity aspect of Preludes, a poem written by T.S. Elliot. According to a critic (Martin and Hill, 1999:38), Preludes is often identified as a descriptive-narrative poem through an analysis of verb types (static/dynamic). However, the style identification through the verb type analysis is less satisfying. The analysis model of Systemic Functional Grammar (Halliday, 1985/1994), which is designed as a grammar system as a means for people to interact and a means to analyze texts in a wide range of differing contexts, offers an alternative by exploring the dimension of meaning (experiential, interpersonal, and textual). Transitivity structure, which is the grammatical structure of experiential meaning, focuses on Process Types explaining the “goings-on”—happening, doing, sensing, etc.—involving the participants in the process. The systemic analysis of Preludes shows that the four verse poem is dominated by the material process type. The first and second verses are identified as the descriptive parts by the presence of grammatical metaphor, present tense, and multiple participants. On the contrary, the third and fourth verses are realized in a more congruent form, past tense, and have a particular consistent participant. It can be said that the first and second verses function as the background of the narrative presented in the third and fourth verses. The poem Preludes talks about the challenging daily life of the working class people in an industrial city who work hard in the day time and have a leisure time in bars at night
