EFL teachers have put many efforts in order to integrate cultures in the language classroom since it cannot be denied that learning a language cannot be separated from learning the cultures where the language is spoken. The integration of cultures in the language classroom is important for EAP classes in Petra Christian University. EAP classes are heterogeneous classes because the learners joining these classes are from various departments excluding the English department. Moreover, the language skills learnt in these classes are integrated and the learners seldom read English literary works in the classroom and in their daily activities. Due to the time constraint, EAP teachers always focus on the language skills and hardly ever raise their learners’ cultural awareness. However, one of the most successful techniques in language teaching is to put the language in a meaningful context. This can be achieved by using folktales from learners’ own cultures. Furthermore, the use of folktales can integrate cultures in the language classroom since it can stimulate their background knowledge and increase their motivation and positive attitudes toward the learning of English. Folktales from different cultures can act as a bridge for language learning as well as for discussing cultural similarities and differences. This paper will focus on how to exploit folktales in order to generate various interactive activities that can motivate EAP learners to learn English language skills and raise their cultural awareness.
