Idiom is a string of words whose semantic interpretation cannot be derived compositionally from the interpretation of its parts. Since it is non-compositional, idiom cannot be translated based on its linguistic forms. Idioms are also culture sensitive-they are closely related to the cultural background in which those idioms appear. As a product of culture, English novels, especially written by women novelist, contain idiomatic expressions that can only be understood by the readers of the related cultural background. When translating these novels into Indonesian, the translators must be able to maintain the original message of the authors in such a way that the readers will not think of them as the translated versions of the novels. In doing so, translators need several strategies to translate English idioms into Indonesian. This paper will explore those translation strategies done by Indonesian translators to translate English idioms (esp. metaphors and similes) in novels. Since the success of the translation is determined by the transferability of meaning, the writer will compare the meaning of the original idioms and the meaning of the translations. If the meanings are the same, they are considered successful and vice versa
