Novels as literary texts can be analyzed with two different approaches:intrinsic and extrinsic.The analysis of a literary work with the focus on how the writer chooses the language (words, sentence patterns, figures of speech and cohesive devices) to express his /her ideas is called stylistics. This paper tries to explore the strategy of delaying clarification and naming employed by Henry James in his novel Daisy Miller. The two main problems are : what strategy is used and what are the effects on the aesthetic values of the literary work? The theories used as the guideline in this analysis are those introduced by Leech and l Short, Toolan, and Halliday. The strategy of delaying clarification is concerned with the concept of reference, that is, the order of referring expression and the referent/antecedent, the referring expression comes after the antecedent.(anaphora). But a novelist sometimes makes deviations for aesthetic values . Naming refers to the technique to refer to the characters in the story. The result of the analysis shows that Henry James employs the strategy of delaying clarification to create the curiosity in the mind of the readers. He first refers to the characters using pronouns and definite descriptions but postpones mentioning the proper name. Concerning naming, the analysis shows that James refers to his characters in the story using pronoun, definite description and proper names with different percentage. The impact is that the high frequency of proper name is the signal of respect while high frequency of definite description is the signal of contempt for the character.
