Isi artikelIn learning foreign language, not only the structure, vocabulary, or other language aspects that one should only learn, but also the culture of the target language. The learners do not realize how important to study the culture until he or she communicates with native speakers or goes abroad. Many language learners make pragmatic failures because he or she does not understand the culture of the target language. Cultural learning is a part of language learning, and culture is one of the important elements to understanding the context or message in communication. Culture is in language, and language is loaded with culture. The interconnectedness of culture and language can improve one’s ability to understand the target language’s meaning. But applying the complex relationship of language and cultural processes has not been an easy task, therefore intercultural language learning should be added to the materials. Intercultural language learning involves developing with learners an understanding of their own language(s) and culture(s) in relation to a target language and its culture. To study intercultural learning, pragmatic competence is required to help the understanding of utterances or sentences of target language. In practice, there are so many pragmatic failures produced by the L2 learner in understanding the target language since the language is bounded with the foreign culture. Pragmatics deals with the ways learners reach their goals in communication because it focuses on learners' knowledge, use, and acquisition of target language to understand the target language and culture.
