The emergence of the Brown Corpus in 1967 gave linguists a new tool to aid in the study of language. Texts could be analyzed according to register, frequencies could be determined within those registers and collocates of words could be identified and evaluated. An examination of actual language allowed researchers to see real patterns in language that could aid the field of TESOL, as a corpus-based analysis showed earlier conclusions of language usage based on intuition to be incorrect. This paper examines the use of newspaper reading as a tool in the classroom for teaching the predominate grammatical and vocabulary features found in news register as identified by corpus linguistics. Three of these features- complex noun phrases, lexical verbs and passive voice- will be highlighted in the overall teaching of this discourse based on their prevalence in this particular register. The role of corpus linguistics and SLA will also be discussed. This discussion will be followed by a series of lesson plans teachers can use with authentic materials to bridge theory with practice in the classroom
