Isi artikelThis study examines (1) the most popular/dominant of the English Language Learning Strategies (ELLSs) employed by Indonesian University students, (2) the relationship between Language Learning Strategies (LLSs) use and students’ English proficiency level. Two main instruments of data collection were used i.e., an 80-item Strategy Inventory for Language Learning and proficiency test which were conducted on 24 first semester students who learned English 1 as mandatory subject at the faculty of political and social sciences, Muhammadiyah university (Unismuh) Makassar. Data analysis relied heavily on statistical analysis i.e., Multiple Comparison Tests. The results of the study reveal that (1) the most popular (dominant) of English Language Learning Strategies (ELLSs) used by Indonesian university students is social strategies and metacognitive, and Compensation strategy is the least frequent, (2) The students who used various strategies had good scores in the test. This shows that language learning strategies facilitate the learning of English as a Foreign Language (EFL) in Indonesia
