Isi artikelThis paper deals with the types of address terms used by Bugis people to communicate. This is based on the research I conducted in 2005 in two different Bugis communities, Bone and Parepare. To collect data, I employed ethnography of communication using some strategies such as participant observation, informal interview, and recording conversations. The result of the research found that there are many types of address terms used by Bugis people to communicate such as personal names including nicknames, kinship terms, and status terms relating to noble status, religious status, occupation status, and some combinations of these address terms. The use of these address terms is influenced by many factors such as My study also shows that there are many factors affecting the right usage of these address terms such as social status, gender differences, age differences, degree of familiarity, and communicative situations. The choice of address terms may have several functions. Some status terms such as noble and religious/hajj status may convey the symmetrical or asymmetrical relations between speakers. Others can function to maintain intimacy among different interlocutors in different situations.
