Representation is a matter of choice. The same news object or event represented by different signifiers will result in different meanings. The selection of signifiers whether paradigmatically or syntagmatically is underpinned by the codes or ideology promoted. Hence, the study of how an event is reported by different newspapers will reveal ideologies surrounding the media. The present study tries to explore how cultural heritage issue is represented in The Jakarta Post and ANTARA News in the middle of 2007 when the use of the perceived Indonesian cultural symbol by Malaysia was at issue. The texts concerning Reog Ponorogo, Serampang 12, Angklung, Batik, Rasa Sayange and Jali-jali in the two media were analyzed using functional grammar framework. It was found that The Jakarta Post and ANTARA News favored discussing topics about Indonesia, which is indicated by positioning Indonesia as the unmarked themes (35.05% and 58.82% in The Jakarta Post and ANTARA News respectively) compared to other topics, such as Malaysia or the cultural heritage themselves. However, the two media had different emphasis on the discussion about Indonesia. The Jakarta Post represents Indonesia as “the victim” who “suffers”, “is embarrassing”, “bad”, “upwind” and “aghast”, while Malaysia is “the active perpetrator” who “used” and “patented” some pieces of Indonesian cultural heritage. On the contrary, ANTARA News represents Indonesia in a “neutral” position with no negative or positive adjective was given to it, while Malaysia was represented “to have claimed” Indonesian cultural heritage.
