In this chapter, we will further investigate picture descriptions, visualisations and mental imagery. In the first section of this chapter, we will focus on the issue of visualisations in discourse production and discourse comprehension. In particular, we will look at an example of how focus movements and the participants’ mental images can be reconstructed from a spontaneous conversation including drawing. In the second section, we will ask whether speakers use mental images in descriptive discourse and review the results of our studies on picture description and mental imagery. After a short discussion about possible application in educational contexts, we will conclude.
