It was determined that the primary need was for practical and accurate methods for testing the physical properties of foundry sands. While many physical properties of foundry san mixtures were in interest, the following were decided to be of greates importance : moisture content, permeability, strength, fineness, durability of life. The committee on standard test of the A. F. S. Foundry sand research committee set to work to develop methods, and in 1924 published a set of tentative standards for determining moisture content, strength, permeability and fineness, and method for chemical analysis.
