Abstract
Health is one of the valuable assets that must be maintained countinously as early as possible. Periodic assessment for health status is one of many ways that can be done as a preventive action for possible diseases. BMI or Body Mass Index is a ratio of body weight to body height. The use of BMI as one of ways for direct nutritional status assessment have a fairly high degree of accuracy. The objection of the research is to determine body circumference standard as a health indicator from maximum or minimum value of body circumference for children in primary school age from WHO by BMI categories for children aged 7 years to 12 years. A total of 432 children aged 7 years to 12 years participated in the study as a sample that gives anthropometric data of body height, body weight and some body circumference consisting of head circumference, neck circumference, chest circumference, waist circumference, hip circumference, thigh circumference and the upper arm circumference. Children who participate were selected by Convenience sampling techniques and direct measurements which is conducted during April 2012 to June 2012 and November 2012 period in Jakarta Capital Region of Indonesia. Anthropometric data are used to calculate children’s BMI and then used to assess the health status of childrens by BMI category using charts from the CDC, BMI percentile values. The average size of the body circumference from children with a specific health status were grouped and calculated to be tested to estimate the average value of the population from children in group health, age and the same gender. A total of 4 groups of body circumference standards from the research divides children ages into two groups of children ages for each gender. Standards of Body circumference for childrens aged 7 years to 9 years and 10 years to 12 years childrens will be validated to determine the accuracy of the standard for the direct assessment of health status. The results showed that the standard of chest circumference, hip circumference standards and standard of thigh circumference becomes standards with high accuracy and can be used for direct assessment of children's health status. The results also showed that the standard of body circumference as a health indicator based on BMI works better for detecting children with obese status. Calculation of Body Surface Area (BSA) by Mosteller formula also done in this research. Generaly, results showed a strong correlation between BMI value and BSA value.
