Can’ a physical shock inflict a wound to the mind? This is, as we tend to forget, what ’trauma’ originally meant: an injury, an open wound, a violent rupture in the surface of the skin. Still today, military surgeons deal with ’traumas’ due to bullet or cannon fire, and trauma units welcome all comers from the battlefields of highway and workplace. However, this is not generally what we imagine when we say that someone has suffered a trauma. What we mean, rather, is that some violent or unexpected event wounded this person spiritually, psychically: he suffers from depression and fits of rage ever since that terrible slaughter in Vietnam (Post-Traumatic Stress Disorder); she suffers from insomnia and anorexia ever since she was raped (Rape Trauma Disorder); their personality split into pieces due to the discipline of an abusive father (Multiple Personality Disorder).
