Already in the nineteenth century psychiatry, more than other medical disciplines, was concerned with its own history. Nevertheless, the actual historiography of psychiatry is a relatively young discipline. A workshop held in 1967 on methodological problems in the history of psychiatry illustrates the reasons for the inadequacies of this science.
