Abstract
Small and medium enterprises (SME) hold an important role in developing a country’s economy. Nevertheless, various data showed that many SME’s didn’t manage to stay in the competition due to a handful of problems. A few of them include capital shortage, marketing difficulties, lack of good quality and affordable materials, low-qualifying human resources, absence of entrepreneurial spirit, little access to the market, and weak organizational management. A good choice of strategies will contribute to the SME’s survival, and therefore strategic management is needed. Strategic management will help SME’s solve their problems, since strategic management has been proven in assisting the organization to improve, raising its awareness to external threats, giving better understanding of competitors’ strategies, increasing employees’ productivity, and reducing the unwillingness to change. Strategic analysis and choice is one of the steps in the framework of strategic management. Strategic position analysis and strategy prioritization is conducted in this research. ase study is conducted in Surya Jaya Stone, a medium enterprise in Tulungagung producing various kinds of wall cladding and floor cladding products. The first step is analyzing the strategic position with the help of SPACE (Strategic Position and Action Evaluation) Matrix, being the tool of choice for its ability to analyze the SME’s condition from four different dimensions (competitive advantage, financial strength, industry strength, and environmental stability). The SPACE Matrix is also capable of mapping the SME into a strategic position in one of these quadrants/positions: aggressive, conservative, defensive, or competitive. The result of strategic position analysis shows that Surya Jaya Stone is positioned in the Agressive quadrant. Based on the result, a set of complying strategies is derived. Strategy prioritization is done using QSPM (Quantitative Strategy Planning Matrix), and the result shows that the most attractive strategy to the least attractive for Surya Jaya Stone are respectively as follows: adding new floor cladding and wall cladding product variants; expanding sales area to potential areas; developing new products made with natural stones such as placemats and accessories; holding promotional events such as giving discounts and placing both printed and electronic advertisement (via internet); business diversification by opening non-related new product lines (e.g. shoes, food products, apparel, etc.); selling directly to end consumers; acquiring or holding a joint venture with smaller SME’s; and integrating with natural stone suppliers in Java.
