It's no exaggeration to say that we live in a world with remarkable deprivation, desperation and oppression. In many countries, overcoming these problems is a central part of the exercise of development. But, unfortunately, economic development as such is not only the way out. Indeed, to counter the problems, we have to see individual agency as a social commitment. This is the approach that this article tries to explore and examine. By following Amartya Sen, an Indian economist-philosopher, this paper defends the position that freedom and justice, individual agency and social, political and economic opportunities, are complementary approaches to handle the problems. In such a kind of perspective, economical development at every stage should be arranged with respect to values and cultural appraisal. |
