The thematic approach to teaching and learning activities at the lower grades of the elementary school had been required since the implementation of the 1994 curriculum. This classroom action research aimed to uncover examples of themes, concepts, scientific processing skills, techniques of students' achievement evaluation, and the effectiveness of the thematic approach at the third grade. The school principals, the classroom teachers and the third grade students of SD Kanisius Sengkan and Sorowajan participated as subjects in the study consisting of two cycles of teaching and learning activities. The results showed that using the theme of kegiatanku (my activity) and adopting the technique of students' achievement evaluation, many concepts and processing skills could be inculcated within the students through the adoption of the thematic approach. This approach proved to be effective as indicated by an increase in. the achievement of the success indicators from Cycle 1 to Cycle 2 with regard to the positive feelings the students experienced after the teaching and learning activities, their level of mastery, their active interaction within groups during the teaching and learning process, and the quality of the RPP and its implementation.
