Isi artikelCHINA'S insatiable appetite for commodities has been manna from heaven for the countries and firms that supply it. Take the iron ore that feeds the smelters of Shougang Steel and its rivals. Three mining conglomerates, BHP Billiton, Vale and Rio Tinto, control about 70% of the world's trade in iron ore. Each year they negotiate annual supply contracts with their main customers, and as demand has surged, so has the price. In 2005 it rose by a whopping 72%. The rate of increase subsequently slowed, but this year some importers have agreed to rises of 68% or more. Even after these swingeing increases, demand still outstrips supply.
