Abstract
Abdoel Moeis' Salah Asuhan (A Wrong Upbringing) was first published in 1928. After going through a very strict censorship, Balai Poestaka eventually published it. Differently from previous criticisms, this paper offers a different perspective. This paper will focus on examining the Dutch colonial education for the native (bumiputra) and the way it ted the natives to their alienation from both the native and the Western societies in the Dutch East indies. The paper is grounded upon the postcolonial theories concerning colonial education and the alienation of the native in a colonial/postcolonial society. The evidences found in the novel suggest that the colonial education aimed at creating indigenous generation who was good at administrational skills and so they would be useful for the colonial government. At the same time, it produced degrading colonized subject as represented by Hanafi, a Minangkabau young man. Hanafi had been much westernized because he was sent to Batavia to live and study among Westerners since he was a child. He denounced his own Minangkabau and Malay cultures. He even had decided to obtain his legal rights as a Westernized man and changed his name into a Western one. Hanafi married a Western girl named Corrie de Bussee. Hanafi's Western education and upbringing had detached him from his own people. His marital status to Corrie further removed him not only from his own people but also from the Western colonial circle. In the end, realizing his big mistakes, out of desperation Hanafi took his own life.
