This article investigates the extent to which categories normally labeled "irrealis" are marked in a similar fashion in Lake Miwok, a central California Indian language. Sentences involving negation, the future, wishes, ,s, contrary-to-fact conditions, and result clauses are considered from synhronic and historical perspectives.
