An introductory course on syntax is all about the nature of syntactic representations ± providing a framework through which we interpret the facts at our disposal. However one approaches the teaching of introductory syntax, giving a clear presentation of the fundamental concepts of syntactic analysis is the ®rst prerequisite. This requires a concern for a clear and rigorous formulation of the tools of linguistic analysis.# As Chomsky noted in the preface to Syntactic structures (1957: 5),
