This research attempts to find out whether the issue of ‘Adjective + Preposition’ combinations is problematic in English language learning. I also want to find out whether students are able to properly use the ‘Adjective + Preposition’ combinations and what kinds of problems are faced by the students in using such fixed combinations. The participants in this study are 37 students in their first year at KARUNIA Senior High School. Data for the research were collected from the translation tests done by the students. The tests were divided into two parts. This research focuses on 15 adjectives followed by fixed prepositions, such as fond of, angry with, anxious about, etc.. The findings of this research are there are three combinations which relate to the positive transfer. They are generous with, suitable for, impressed and ready for. The other twelve combinations relate to negative transfer. This research reveals that not all ‘Adjective + Preposition’ combinations considered problematic to the students. Some preposition combinations, such as generous with, suitable for, and impressed with are not problematic because those combinations have similarities with the combination used in Indonesian (positive transfer). However, the other combinations tend to be problematic for the students because there are differences in using the preposition combinations between Indonesian and English (negative transfer). |
