Abstract
Background : Nowadays, there is about 35 million people who suffer from dementia all over the world and could be increase two fold every 20 years, 65.7 million at 2030 (WAR,2009) in South East Asia Countries. The prevalence of dementia in elderly in Jakarta, was 62.5% and this prevalence increase along with age increase ( Handajani YS, 2006). The impact of dementia not only to the sufferer, but also to the family, health care system and the community. The cost to take care dementia patients approximately US$ 315 billion each year. Most of them need drug and supplement therapy every day. However, dementia could be prevented or the occurance be delayed. Cohort study at Mayo hospital with moderate physical activity to respondent age 50-65 tahun and older, was an protective factor towards mild cognitive disturbance (Gede. YE, et al,2010). The aims of this study: to get description about the effect of brain vitality exercise towards dementia in elderly people. Methods : this was an experimental study. The population was elderly age 60 years above and live in Pusaka (elderly community to gain social activities) in South Jakarta and the study sample was all the member of Pusaka 35 (intervension group) and Pusaka 19 (control group) which filled the inclusion criteria. Dementia was diagnosed using Mini Mental State Examination (MMSE). The result : Using non parametric program analysis (Mann Whitney U), we obtained that brain vitality exercise which was carrying out for one year reduced the amount of elderly with dementia.( p=0.010)
