Isi artikelInformal sector is one of many characteristics of Jakarta. As a metropolitan area, Jakarta fails to provide enough jobs in the formal sector for its labour force. Then, the informal sector absorbs the abundant labour force of teh city, mainly of those who have migrated to the city, from various area thoughout Indonesia. This paper focuses on two jobs in the informal sector, which are the street vendor (pedagang kaki lima) and the street gangsters (preman). Through a series of indepth-interviews to a number of street vendors and street gangsters in Pasar Tanah Abang, a busy shopping area notorious for its streets Vendors gangsters, this paper tries to figure out the social relations beetwen these two groups. A pattern of patron-client relationship is often applied to analyse the social relations of the two groups, where the street vendors are the clients and the gangsters act as the patrons. However, in Pasar Tanah Abang, things can be the other way round.
