Abstract
Employee volunteerism is a complement to corporate philanthropy. Volunteer programs and project have the ability to unite employees by focusing them toward common goal, by bringing them together in a more relaxed setting, and by providing an environment conducive to the development of friendship outside the workplace. This activity will also promote better community relations of the organization that increase decent works and social protection. The aim of this paper is to explain the role of communication strategic and implementation in order to enhance the employee volunteerism. This explanation is derived from theoretical framework of public relations theory and the implementation of business communication competence strategies. Methods used for this research is in line with a constructivist paradigm with qualitative and interpretive approach.
Results of this study explain that there are significant roles of communication in encouraging employee volunteerism. Effective employee communication depends on the establishment of a positive organizational climate. Feeling of trust, confidence, openness, candor, supportiveness, security, satisfaction, involvement, and high expectations characterize ideal organizational climates. An important factor in improving organizational climate is the establishment of a communication strategic. Research found that top management generally recognizes the need for and sincerely desires two way communications. The bottleneck in corporate communication is found in the middle of the corporate hierarchy. Breakdown in the communication process is most often at the first-line supervisor level.
The need of communication strategic is goal oriented rather than event oriented. It implementation should help employee understand, contribute to, and identify with organizational objectives and problems. The result show that internal communications is needed to accomplish the following: communicate the corporate goals, facilitate participative management initiatives, continually monitor the internal and external environment, establish an environment of trust and credibility, and provide opportunities to interact.
Improve employee relations, as well as improved relations with stakeholders, the media, and special interest groups, are not the only auxiliary benefits a company may enjoy as a result of its volunteer program. The real rewards of volunteering stem from the knowledge that someone else has benefited from their efforts.
Conclusion drawn from this study is that there are significant roles of organizational communication in order to enhance the employee volunteerism. Effective employee communication depends on the establishment of a positive organizational climate. Like any other aspect of a business, such program must be managed effectively to prove successful. If managed properly, employee-volunteer programs constitute a ‘win-win-win” situation for all involved: nonprofit organizations, companies, and company employees all benefit in numerous ways. Therefore, developing and implementing communication strategic as part of the whole management strategic of the organization is strongly recommended.
