Abstract
Audiovisual translation as a new variety of translation in this multimedia era has been significant in the past few years. Subtitling, a part of this new translation variety, has also shown its prominence. Several aspects of subtitling, one of which is the strategies, have been discussed in the literature. However, little study has shown how these strategies are applied into Indonesian. Therefore, the objective of this study is to discover the subtitling strategies used in the development of the Indonesian subtitles found in ten samples of children TV program produced by Trans 7, Home Stay. Besides discovering the utilized strategies, this study also looks closely upon how accurate and natural the subtitles are. There are approximately 801 English utterances, which consist of 686 utterances that are accompanied with Indonesian translation in the form of subtitles, and 115 utterances that are not English or accompanied with Indonesian subtitles. These subtitles are then analyzed and classified by using the ten subtitling strategies proposed by Henrik Gottlieb (1992). One of the results of this analysis is that transfer strategy is the most frequently utilized strategy in the data corpus. Furthermore, this study further confirms that Gottlieb’s strategies are not exclusive to one another as they may appear simultaneously in a subtitle frame. The 686 subtitles are then subjected to the evaluation on accuracy and naturalness done by seven Indonesian native speakers who are good in both English and Indonesian. The accuracy perspective is based on Larson’s definition (1984) that a translation must include all the meaning from the original, without adding or substracting the meaning, and does not change the meaning. As for naturalness, it follows Shuttleworth and Cowie’s idea (1997) that the language used in translation must reflect the natural way of expression of the native speakers. The responses gathered from the native speakers show the fact that although there exists a common tension between accuracy and naturalness, it is still possible to achieve both aspects in the subtitles at the same time.
