The phoneme is the individual speech sound that can make one world different from others (e.g, /b/ and /p/ are individual phonemes differentiating 'bat' from 'pat'). However, there are no neatly cut off segments in the fluent quality of natural speech, neither in the acoustic signal nor in the articulation of the speaker. For speech perception, the unit that is analysed in the ear and in the brain has been shown to be both smaller than and larger than the phoneme.
