Universities are called upon to accomplish a three-fold mission of transferring knowledge through instructional programs, acquiring knowledge through research programs, and utilizing knowledge through community-service programs. The research-part of this mission is usually the toughest to do, because research requires high-grade expertise and quite substantial funding, which are not easy to come by unless the university is of outstanding academic stature already.
