Isi artikelThis article opens with a general introduction on the new developments in Indonesian literature during the 1980s, a decade marked by significant diversity. One of the current phenomena has been the increasing attemps on the part of various authors to recollect about and reflect on the coup events of 1965 and its prolonged traumatic aftermath. Having set this context succinctly, the author makes a close examination of a 1985 novel, Anak Tanahair by Ajib Rosidi, as a remarkable example of the aforementioned phenomenon. The analysis shows how daring Ajib Rosidi has been in exploring this recent past history in the first 150 pages of the novel. But, it also shows how in the rest of the novel he undercuts his own exploration in the face of perceived political imperatives.
