The National Innovation System (NIS) in Indonesia has not performed as expected. At present, communication and interaction between research institutions and business entities are very limited due to a mismatch between technologies developed and real problems faced by industries. It is recommended that future researches should be more goal-oriented, focusing on tackling real issues and answering domestic needs. Consequently, role of technology users (industries) in driving flows of technology at one direction and flow of information on market demand at opposite direction among NIS institutions should be more pronounced. Institutions of higher education should also be directly involved in supporting NIS by producing well-trained human resources with expertise for development relevant technologies. Government institutions should play their roles in creating conductive environment for NIS development.
