The development of strategic industries in Indonesia has been introduced since the late 1970s. At least 10 industries have been designated as strategic industries, including aerospace, shipbuilding, railroads, telecommunication, electronics, explosives, steel and machine goods. The methodology devised to improve the capability of the strategic industries consists of four measurable stages. This paper aims at discussing briefly the progress of the present state of the development of strategic industries and what should be done next towards the dynamics implications of globalization. It is suggested that the future development of strategic industries needs to take into account not only the social-economic and political realities, but more importantly to reach international competitiveness.
