It has been assumed that some usage of the English words is different from the original when used as loanwords in Indonesian communication. The premise is made based on findings of some English loanwords which are not used as in the original usage. This phenomenon has aroused the curiosity to further explore these differences. The present study aims at finding the various ways in which English loanwords are used in Indonesian communication, as well as some explanations on why the English loanwords are utilised the way they are. In collecting the data, a list of loanwords is used as a reference and samples of their use in written communication are taken from various websites, and samples in spoken communication are noted down from daily conversations. Next, the English loanwords are compared and analyzed on their use in English and in Indonesian in context from the samples. The analysis of loanwords in this study is based on the three areas of linguistics: semantics, syntax, and morphology, as taken from previous studies on loanwords. The results of the study are: (1) there are differences related to semantics and syntax on the usage of English loanwords in Indonesian compared with the original and (2) that blending has been made to English words involving Indonesian morphology when used in Indonesian communication. The difference concerning semantics is the reduction and addition of meaning of English loanwords. The differences in relation to syntactic factors include changes in parts of speech and in collocation. The blending of English loanwords and Indonesian morphology includes adding Indonesian noun, verb, and adjective affixes. Some explanations on why the differences and blending occur are as follows: (1) reductions of meaning occur because Indonesians simply have no use for some of the senses as there is already a native word to express the same meaning; (2) the addition of new senses can be the result of either connotation, denotation, extension or intension; (3) changes in parts of speech occur because both English and Indonesian allow the conversion of parts of speech of some words; (4) the word pair in collocation is different because collocations have “arbitrary restrictions”, which means that the word combination may be changed; and (5) the blending of English words with Indonesian affixes occurs due to the fact that Indonesian is an “agglutinative language”.
