Teaching Practice (TP) in teacher education program is viewed as the pinnacle of the curriculum where student teachers put theories and skills into real action. Under supervisions, student teachers are expected to handle classrooms in a similar with real classroom situation. In light of this importance, teaching practice should be elevated to the level beyond product merely measuring student teachers' failing or passing the course. Unfortunately, there is not much research done to reveal the most important agents involved in teaching practice that is lecturers and student teachers. Therefore this study wants to examine the teaching practice in Indonesia and how student teachers and the supervisors actually perceive teaching practice. The respondents of this study were student teachers and lecturers at random picks from several institutions in Indonesia. The data obtained lecturers' and students' perceptions and information regarding teaching practice at their institutions. The data were collected using questionnaires and interview. The results were that both student teachers and lecturers have positive perceptions toward teaching practice. They found TP beneficial and considered it as the rnost important phase in teacher education program. In terms of TP in Indonesia, there were various procedures, but basically TP involves having briefing, doing observation, making of lesson plans, teaching aids, etc, consulting lesson plans, teaching and doing evaluation. Several suggestions were made regarding standard TP procedure, same perceptions toward TP, supervisors' roles, material development, feedback, evaluation method and further study. |
