The purpose of this study is to uncover the Atma Jaya Catholic University students’ perception of English and Mandarin in the near future. It aims at identifying whether English will remain as the only global language in the near future. This study also intends to determine whether Mandarin will become another global language in the near future, in addition to English. In order to get the result of this study, the writer carried out a survey research by employing the questionnaire as the basic research method for this study. The writer used the likert-scale questionnaires. The target population of this study was Atma Jaya Catholic University students. The respondents were students from seven faculties excluding the Faculty of Medicine since this study was carried out in the limited time. The total number of respondents for this research were 259 students. In distributing the questionnaires, the writer chose the simple random sampling strategies and some of the data were collected through email. The data obtained were computer-analyzed using SPSS, the Statistical Package for the Social Sciences. From the result of the findings and the discussion which are presented in chapter IV of this thesis, it can be concluded that according to the respondents, English is obviously a global language at present. In the future, English will still be a global language, and will always be a global language. However, English will not remain as the only global language in the near future. The respondents perceive that Mandarin will be another global language in the near future in addition to English. |
