Abstract
Language anxiety may influence the way students communicate with their peers in the class. Previous studies reported that anxiety arousal has a number of effects on academic, cognitive, social and personal, as well as personal career. It is necessary for teachers to apply appropriate
strategies to reduce learners’ anxiety. The research reported here was design to investigate the effectiveness of some strategies for teacher to alleviate learner anxiety proposed by Young (1991)in an EFL Speaking classroom. The research involved 21 students of a conversation class in the Faculty of Economics at the University of Al-Azhar Indonesia. The study shows that the strategies are generally effective in alleviating language anxiety. The most effective strategies are ‘friendly, relaxed, humorous and encouraging instructor and constructive ways of correction such as modeling and focusing on meaning instead of grammar’ which significantly lower
learner language anxiety stemming from instructor-learner interaction.‘Agony column’ is the focus of the present study as the major source of learner anxiety stems from personal and
interpersonal interactions. Apparently, the strategy only quite effective in reducing learner language anxiety stemming from personal and interpersonal interaction. An organic course plan
incorporating modified ‘agony column’ and other strategies to create low-anxiety classroom atmosphere is provided in this study.
