Abstract
This research is conducted in order to find the problems relating to the English articles among adult learners and try to find out the factors that affect learner’s ability in using the English articles. In order to conduct this research, the writer
replicated the methodology used in the previous research conducted by Capri Arista Dewi Anjaya in 2000. In that previous research, Anjaya took the students of Junior and Senior High School as the participants. In this research, the participants (72 adults) were divided into two groups: a
group of Employees and a group of Master Degree Students. Each group consists of 36 participants and they were all given the same test of article. The test which consists of 38 questions was conducted in order to find out the participant’s ability in using the articles in English sentences. The participants were expected to answer those questions by choosing one of the articles which they assumed to be
appropriate. The test used in this research was taken from Anjaya’s research. In order to know if this test of articles can be used again; the writer conducted a statistic test using SPSS 18. The objective of this statistic test is to know the
validity and reliability of the materials used in the test of articles. The results show that the materials in this test of article are valid and reliable. It means that this test
of articles is applicable for this research. After that, all data gathered from the participants were analyzed based on the categories in each type of article. The results in each article and group are presented in tables. By doing so, the writer
expects to find the problems in using English articles among adults and compare the differences between the two groups of adults. The writer also compared the result in this study to the previous one conducted by Anjaya in 2000. This step was taken in order to know the differences between the group of adults and the group of teenagers in using English articles.
There are three major findings in this research. The first finding tells us that the two groups of adults have the same pattern relating to the easiest and the most difficult category in each article. The second finding shows us that there is no
difference between the group of employees and the group of Master Degree students in their ability to use the English articles. The third finding shows different result from the second one. It happens that the group of adults shows
better results than the group of teenagers. The results in this study tell us that the years of learning is one factor that affects learner’s ability in using the English articles appropriately
