There are many factors that are attributed as the causes of the crisis. Our focus here is on the major kinds of market participants, and how each of them is perceived to have contributed to, or been victimized by, the crisis. Our goal is to trace back from the events and consequences to identify the root causes, some of which remain obscured by layers of business processes and by proprietary systems whose accuracy historically has been taken for granted and whose data, assumptions, formulas, and logic were thought to be valid.
